The show entitled Ryan Raftery Is The Most Powerful Woman in Fashion is a two-night-only ‘fierce jukebox bio-musical’ which premieres this evening at Joe’s Pub and returns during NYFW for an encore on September 5th.

The show’s creator, Ryan Raftery, told The Cut that that infamous Kim Kardashian and Kanye West cover story on the April issue of US Vogue is a key plot point, as Anna’s afraid she’ll be fired for her decision and  then takes a journey back – looking at the achievements of her life. (FYI: that issue of Vogue sold an estimated 250,000 copies, so I think the real-life Wintour’s job was probably fine…)

Raferty took inspiration from numerous Wintour interviews he watched on YouTube, R.J. Cutler’s The September Issue, and his imagination to devise the script and theatrical production. So, what can we expect from the show? There are said to be some laugh-out-loud moments – such as Wintour’s assistant changing an intercom buzzer to please her boss, with one of the settings referred to as ‘Chic Baby Noise’.
One number will have Anna and André Leon Talley reworking the lyrics to the Broadway diddy “Class” from Chicago, reworked as “Flats” where they take on our increasingly casual world in a duet.

Clearly there’s a place for Anna in the theatre, because tonight’s show is sold out, but although Wintour is a keen theatre-goer (she co-hosted the 2012 Evening Standard Theatre Awards with Christopher Bailey), don’t expect to see her in the audience. “I mean, she left the Met Ball early,” Raftery said. “She is not going to come downtown to see some fairy in a $5 Ricky’s wig prance around the stage for an hour.”

The ticket price is $20, which will save you plenty of cash with which to stock up on Louboutins 😉 Further details are available here.
