wizard-of-oz-original1In celebration of the classic film The Wizard of Oz‘s 75th anniversary, as well as Warner Bros’ There’s No Place Like Home initiative for non-profit organisation Habitat for Humanity, designers such as Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Jenny Packham, Trina Turk, Chris Benz, Lubov Azria, Hervé Leger, Anna Sui, Betsey Johnson, Carmen Marc Valvo and Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo have been enlisted to create a selection of one-of-a-kind 22-inch dolls.

wizard-of-oz1Trina Turk reimagined Dorothy’s pinafore as a chic peplum jumpsuit.

“To me, Dorothy is one of the few iconic heartland American girls in the movies, so having the opportunity to reenvision her style was exciting,” said Chris Benz. “We were thinking about tornados and how when it’s windy in New York a piece of newspaper will just fly up in your face and how hilarious it would be to have that silhouette in blue gingham,” he has said of his windswept design.

Chriz Benz was inspired by the tornado scene in The Wizard of Oz, designing a voluminous, windswept dress for Dorothy.

Jenny Packham, however, looked towards the Wicked Witch for her creativity… Taking a somewhat non-traditional route. “Our witch is wicked in a contemporary, avant-garde way. We’ve used a print from one of my favourite collections to create a modern and fashionable witch,” she has said of her design.

Jenny Packham’s design saw the Wicked Witch dressed in a glamorous couture gown with keyhole detail and cinched-in waist.

“These creations are beyond expectation—inspired, visionary and absolutely enchanting from head to toe,” says Robert Tonner, Tonner Doll Company CEO and acclaimed doll artist. “This is The Wizard of Oz and its leading ladies in a way you’ve never seen them before. Each doll is quite … bewitching, to say the least, and we are thrilled and honored to be a part of both the anniversary celebration, and generating proceeds for such a worthy cause.”

wizard-of-oz2Donna Karan gave the Wicked Witch a glamorous spin by updating her dress with a plunging neckline and smattering of sequins.

While Reem Acra went for a ball gown version of Dorothy’s dress, Betsey Johnson gave Glinda a “princess-like prom dress” to rock.

“I love The Wizard of Oz and I have always been inspired by it. I even had ‘Dorothy’ inspired ruby red heels on the runway this season,” says Betsey Johnson. “Glinda is the ultimate representation of what I do. The OTT pink poofy fairy princess-like prom dress is my signature…and who doesn’t want to travel around in a pink flying bubble,” she explains.

wizard-of-oz3Glinda the Good Witch was given a touch of sass by Lubov Azria, who updated her look via a cinched-in ballgown and elaborate necklace.

The designs will debut during New York Fashion Week at the Fashion Institute of Technology on September 4 this year, after which they will be auctioned on eBay to benefit Habitat for Humanity.
